Thai-Cambodian border meeting kicks off

The Thai-Cambodian Regional Border Committee (RBC) meeting began on Aug. 24 in Thailand 's northeastern Nakhon Ratchasima province to discuss several issues, including troop withdrawal.

The meeting wasco-chaired by Lt-Gen Thawatchai Samutsakhon, Thailand 's Second RegionArmy commander, and Cambodia 's Fourth Region Army commander Lt-GenChea Mon, together with Deputy Defence Minister Neang Phat.

Amongthe 15 agenda items, troop withdrawal from the disputed area aroundPreah Vihear Temple will be raised for discussion.

Thetwo-day talks will focus on issues including national security, borderpeace, land development, environmental issues and anti-narcoticsmeasures.

It will discuss the agenda for the 8 th meeting of theThailand-Cambodia General Border Committee (GBC) in Phnom Penh onSept. 8.

Both GBC and RBC meetings have been delayed sincebilateral relations became tense in 2008, when UNESCO placed the PreahVihear Temple on its list of world heritage sites. However,relations between the two countries saw signs of improvement afterThailand elected a new government.

On this occasion, Cambodianrepresentatives also congratulated the new Thai government led by PheuThai Party, which assumed office following July elections./.
