Hanoi (VNA) - Doctors and nurses of Sun G🌳roup International Hospital (Hanoi) joyfully welcomed the hospital’s very first newborn delivered painlessly at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department on May 13 morning.

The eagerly awaited “first ray of sunshine” is a healthy baby girl named Sunny. Weighing 3.3 kilograms at birth, she was given the meaningful Vietnamese name Anh Duong (Sunshine) by her family – closely tied to the hospital’s name. Sunny brings immense joy to her family and marks an unforgettable and inspiring milestone for the hospital and its dedicated obstetric team. The mother, P.A., had a medical history of gestational diabetes and leg swelling starting from the 19th week of pregnancy. Gestational diabetes is one of the most common endocrine disorders in pregnant women. If not properly monitored and managed, it can lead to a series of serious complications for both mother and baby, such as an increased risk of preeclampsia, infections, polyhydramnios, preterm birth, postpartum hemorrhage, or the development of type 2 diabetes after childbirth. For the newborn, poor control can result in birth trauma, neonatal hypoglycemia, respiratory distress, or even stillbirth. In P.A.’s specific case, in addition to gestational diabetes, she also experienced early-onset leg swelling from the 19th week of pregnancy – a symptom associated with multiple risks that requires close monitoring to rule out vascular complications or kidney dysfunction. From the early stages of pregnancy, a specialised care plan was put in place for the expectant mother, involving a multidisciplinary approach including obstetrics, endocrinology, and nutrition. She underwent regular check-ups and tests to monitor blood glucose, HbA1c, fetal Doppler ultrasound, and fetal monitoring. She also received continuous counselling on diet, physical activity, and appropriate medication use. At each milestone of the pregnancy, both maternal and fetal health indicators were closely tracked and assessed, ensuring blood glucose levels remained within safe limits. This allowed the fetus to develop steadily and helped determine the most suitable timing for delivery.

Prof., Dr. Le Thi Thanh Van, head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, shared that the patient’s pregnancy and delivery were thoroughly prepared - from screening, antenatal monitoring, anesthesia and resuscitation, to postpartum care.
