Hanoi (VNA) – More support from theState and general public has been offered to low-income earners anddisadvantaged people across the nation, as the country’s biggest traditionalfestival, Tet (Lunar New Year), approaches.

On January 25, Chairman of the President’sOffice Dao Viet Trung visited and presented Tet gifts to disadvantaged workersof the GGS Vietnam Co., Ltd., in Hoa Binh city, in the northern province of HoaBinh.

He highly valued local authorities’ care forworkers through the various activities organised every Tet, adding that theyhave become part of the annual traditions.

In the northern mountainous province of DienBien, authorities, border guard posts, and various other organisations willmake somewhere between 3,500-4,000 chung cakes – a signature Tet dish – forstate welfare beneficiaries, poor families, and border defence contributors in29 border communes.

Col. Nguyen Thanh Diu, Political Commissar ofthe Dien Bien Border Guard High Command, said border guard units haveencouraged philanthropists and charitable organisations to join hands to offersupport by presenting gifts, clothes and food, or helping with house repair tounderprivileged families in border areas for the Tet holiday.

Meanwhile, the pre-Tet campaign to call forsupport for those in need in the northern province of Thai Nguyen has obtainedpractical results, according to Chairman of the provincial Vietnam FatherlandFront Committee Pham Hoang Son.

He noted that the campaign raised over 27billion VND (1.16 million USD), which has been spent on 22,800 gift packagesand 93 houses, along with many other types of material aid, to thedisadvantaged. Free medical check-ups and treatment have also been given tolocal poor people.

Also on January 25, Tet gifts were given to 800members of the Association of Quang Tri Ancient Citadel’s Soldiers in centralQuang Tri province who are living in difficult circumstances.

Meanwhile, the province’s association of people withdisabilities and Agent Orange victims presented nearly 1,000 gift packages to theirtargeted groups and 22 scholarships to students with disabilities.

Local organisations and businesses have alsojoined efforts to ensure a merry Tet for residents in remote and ethnicminority areas.

The same day, officials of southern An Giangprovince paid pre-Tet visits to workers in local businesses and industrialparks.–VNA
