Social organisations called to join rhino protection efforts

The event forms part ofthe campaign to reduce the demand for the horn launched by theConvention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Faunaand Flora (CITES), the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development,and the Humane Society International (HSI).

Directorof the HIS’s Wildlife Department Teresa Telecky highlighted the role ofsocial organisations in reducing rhino horn demand, with widespreadcommunication campaigns on the importance of protecting the wildlife,including rhino.

Scientific research shows that therhino horn has no medical properties as people have ever thought, shesaid, adding that to prevent rhinos from poaching, some toxic chemicalsare even injected into their horns.

According to theorganisation, there are about 23,800 rhinos in nature, mostly inAfrica where more than 1,000 rhinos were poached last year.

Vietnam is one of the countries having an increasing demand forrhino horns that are smuggled to China, Thailand, Malaysia, andIndonesia.

The last rhino in Vietnam was killed in 2010, which was a tragic lesson in protecting wildlife on the verge of extinction.-VNA

Vietnam 𒈔ramps up plastic waste reꦑcycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
