Soc Trang (VNA) – The third Ooc-Om-Bok Festival (moon worship festival) of theMekong Delta will take place from October 28-November 3, according to theevent’s organising board.
The board said at a press conference on October 19 that, during the week, therewill be a galaxy of activities in Soc Trang province, including a “ngo” boatrace, moon-offering rituals, a lantern-release ceremony, a carnival, a photoexhibition and a trade fair featuring 500 booths.
The “ngo” boat rice is scheduled to take place on November 2-3, bringingtogether 62 teams from regional cities and provinces such as Bac Lieu, Ca Mau,Hau Giang and Kien Giang.
Apart from cultural and sport activities, and art performances, there will be asymposium on tourism development in Soc Trang province.
Ok-Om-Bok is one of the three main festivals – along with Sene Dolta and CholChnam Thmay – that Khmer people celebrate every year and take place under thefull moon. The Khmer believe the moon is a God who controls the weather andcrops throughout the year. -VNA
An exciting boat race kicked off the Khmer community's Ooc Om Bok religious ceremony on Nov. 9in Soc Trang Province to worship the Moon God who brought them a good crop and abundant fish this year.
Nearly 3,000 athletes from the southern province of Soc Trang and a number of neighbouring provinces have registered for the Ngo boat race taking place on November 5-6 alongside the 2014 Mekong Delta Economic Cooperation Forum.
Eight teams will join the tournament, divided into two groups. Group A features Vietnam, the Philippines, Sichuan Club (China), and Australia, while Group B consists of Vietnam U21, Korabelka Club (Russia), Taiwan (China), and U21 Thailand.

The event, part of Vietnam’s cultural diplomacy strategy through 2030, was jointly organised by the Vietnamese Embassy in Venezuela and USM’s Faculty of International Relations. It attracted thousands of students from universities across Venezuela.
