HCM City (VNA)♔ – A contest entitled “Water and Life” was launched at a ceremony in HCM City on May 14 to call for initiatives and solutions on sustainable water use and management.

The contest is jointly organised by the General Department of Environment under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee’s HCM City chapter.
Addressing the ceremony, Deputy Director of the General Department Nguyen The Dong expressed his hope that the contest will gather initiatives from the young generation to address with the impacts of climate change in the southern region. General Development Officer at USAID Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City Stephen F.Berlinguette said the contest presents opportunities for the Vietnamese young people to contribute their part to the community improvement.
Individuals or groups, aged between 16-25, can send their feasible solutions to enhancing the effective use and management of water from May 14 to October 30, 2016. As many as 12 most outstanding initiatives in three categories of saline intrusion, drought and water contamination will be honoured at an award ceremony slated for December. The total prizes are worth 210 million VND (9,500 USD).-VNA

💜 Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

🐻 Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
