Singapore (VNA)🌟 – Halimah Yacob has stepped down as Speaker and member of the SingaporeanParliament on August 7 to run for the presidential election in September.
She submittedher letter of resignation to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Prime MinisterLee said Yacob also leaves the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP), in which shewas a member of the central executive committee. Yacob also senta letter to Deputy Speaker Charles Chong, asking him to lead the Parliamentuntil a new Speaker is elected. Yacob, 62, isthe first woman in Singapore to run for presidency. Under the newConstitution of Singapore, the election will be reserved for a particularracial group if no one from that group has been president for five consecutiveterms. This means the2017 Presidential Election of Singapore will be reserved for candidates fromthe Malay community. The mechanism was initiated by Singaporean Prime MinisterLee Hsien Loong to ensure the multiracial representation of the country. Singapore is amultiracial island country with ethnic Chinese accounting for 74 percent,indigenous Malays for 13 percent and ethnic Indian for 9 percent.-VNA
