Singapore (VNA) – The Singaporean and Myanmar Governments have agreed to lift visa requirements for each other’s citizens from Dec�✃�ember 1.
The moves allow passport holders from the two ASEAN member states to stay up to 30 days in each other’s country.
The two countries reached the visa exemption on June 7 during Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s official visit to Myanmar.
In a meeting between the Singaporean Prime Minister and Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw, the two leaders touched on measures to boost investment, opening Singapore’s vocational training institute in Yangon, tourist promotion and reviewing the two countries’ Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement inked in 1999.
The Singaporean leader called for active participation from the two nations in international issues when meeting with Myanmar State Counselor and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi the same day.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong arrived in Nay Pyi Taw on June 7 on a three-day visit to Myanmar, aiming to consolidate relations between the two countries. Lee's visit comes on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Myanmar-Singapore diplomatic ties.
Economic relations between the two countries have been growing in recent years. Singapore was the third largest trade partner of Myanmar in 2015 and the second largest investor in the country with a total investment of 13 billion USD by April, 2016.
