Singapore (VNA) – Singapore’s Police Coast Guard have been equipped with two new patrol boats that will aid the force’s fight against maritime crime and counter-terrorism capabilities.

According to the Singapore Police Force (SPF), the ships will support the police's overall security operations when major events are staged at the Marina Reservoir in the Marina Bay.

The Police Coast Guard will also use the ships to carry out security operations along the Singapore River, the Kallang Basin at the Marina Reservoir during Parliament sittings, said SPF.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of the ships, Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs Desmond Lee stressed the maritime domain is vulnerable to the threat of terrorism, adding that Singapore’s coast protection policy bases on a strategy of deterrence, detection and response.

To detect threats, additional coastal surveillance cameras will be installed progressively from 2017 and other technologies in the pipeline include panoramic electro-optics sensors and unmanned surface vessels, he said.

▨ Previously, a rocket attack plot targeting Marina Bay in Singapore by Indonesia was brought to light by Indonesian police in August. The event required Singapore authorities to intensify a series of measures to ensure security in the mainland, at the sea and in the air.-VNA
