According to a PCG statement, the incident occurred on April 15 when the MV Hong Hai 16, carrying 25 crew members, was transporting 2,000 litres of lubricant oil and 30,000 litres of diesel. Authorities are currently implementing measures to prevent a potential oil spill.
During the ongoing search and rescue operation on April 17, divers recovered two additional bodies, bringing the confirmed death toll to four.
According to the PCG stated that the crew members were either Chinese or Filipino nationals. So far, a total of 14 people have been rescued, including six Filipinos and eight Chinese nationals./.
This is the first time a ship of the Philippine Coast Guard has visited Vietnam. The visit is of great significance and a practical activity realising the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two forces in January 2024.
