Hanoi (VNA) – Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh, who is Chairmanof the National Committee for Traffic Safety, on January 4 proposed severepunishments for traffic safety violations.

Chairing ateleconference reviewing traffic safety work in 2018 and set forth tasks for2019, Binh said that the tests for driving licenses must be conducted strictly.

He requested theMinistry of Transport to address black spots in traffic accidents, and step bystep close the paths illegally opened crossing railways.

Meanwhile, theMinistry of Public Security and the People’s Committees of provinces and citieswere asked to prioritize the use of fines to buy and install camera systems tomonitor and facilitate the punishment of traffic violations and ensure securityand order.

Inspections must beintensified, especially during the upcoming lunar New Year (Tet) festival, hesaid, adding that high blood alcohol concentration and no-helmet driving arethe two main causes of traffic accidents during festivals.

According to a report bythe National Committee for Traffic Safety, in a year ending on November 15,2018, a total of 18,736 traffic accidents occurred nationwide, killing 8,248people and injuring 14,802 others. The figures represent year-on-year decreasesof 6.71 percent, 0.4 percent and 13.13 percent, respectively.

Road accidentscontinued accounting for a high proportion, with 18,490 cases in which 8,079people were killed and 14,732 others injured.

There were 18localities posting increases in the number of fatalities. Among them, KienGiang, Hau Giang and Bac Giang had growth rates of over 20 percent.-VNA
