Seven injured in blasts in southern Philippines

Hanoi (VNA) - At least seven people, including five soldiersand policemen, were injured in two consecutive blasts at a gas station inTacurong city in Mindanao island, the southern Philippines, on April 17 night.

Local police said the explosions occurred in a Muslim-majority residential area.

Two suspects were arrested but their identities and the motive behind theattack were still under investigation.

Mindanao is the homeland of the Muslim minority in the Philippines. Islamicrebels in the country conducted armed campaigns claiming breakaway in thesouthern Philippines since 1970s. Statistics showed that fighting has left over120,000 people dead.

Major rebel groups have been in peace talks with the Philippine Government butother smaller extremist gangs that have pledged allegiance to the proclaimed IslamicState (IS) have still carried out bombings and kidnappings.-VNA
