A scientific seminar discussing ways to preserve folk music of ethnic minorities in the northern mountainous region took place in the province of Dien Bien on May 10.

Co-hosted by theVietnam National Academy of Music (VNAM) and the provincial Department ofCulture, Sports and Tourism, the event was part of a plan to conduct a nationalstudy on urgent measures to preserve and uphold values of folk music ofVietnamese ethnic minorities during the 2016 – 2020 period.
Nguyen Thuy Tien,a representative of VNAM, said the academy has collected and recorded various genresof folk music of ethnic minorities in the northern mountainous region to conserveand popularise them over the past two decades.
At the seminar,researchers and cultural artisans from Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Hoa Binh, Cao Bang provincestalked about socio-cultural and artistic values of folk music genres in theregion, their role in the spiritual lives, and measures to preserve and upholdthem in the current life.

Participants suggestedlaunching drives to teach and learn traditional musical instruments, raisingpublic awareness of the values of folk music, and offering incentives toartists dedicating to preserving music heritages in localities.-VNA
Xoan singing, a folk music genre in Vietnam, has been removed from UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding and added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Binh Duong has decided to earmark more than 9.7 billion VND (426,800 USD) to protect the “don ca tai tu” art form (southern amateur singing) from 2018-2020, heard a local conference on March 21.
The northern province of Phu Tho launched a daily tour from Hanoi to the land of Hung Kings in early April, allowing tourists to explore traditional Xoan singing. The tour is designed to boost tourism and preserve the local intangible heritage, according to a local official.
On the occasion of the Hung Kings Temple Festival, scheduled to take place between April 20 and 25 in Phu Tho province, Xoan singing performances will be held between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm every day.
