Seminar talks aquaponics industry in Vietnam, Australia

Sydney (VNA) – If 3 percent of 26.9 million Vietnamese farming households engagein aquaponics model, they will together make it a potential market valued atmore than 403 million AUD.

The figureis based on the assumption that each household makes an investment of 500 AUD(385.6 USD), Dr Wilson Lennard, head of the international consulting firmAquaponic Solutions, made the calculation at a seminar in Sydney on November 2.

The seminarwas held by the Australia Vietnam Business Council (AVBC), discussingaquaponics potentials in Australia and Vietnam.

Lennard saidAustralia, beginning its study of the model in early 2000s, has developed plansto build commercial aquaponics systems, while Vietnam and many APEC membereconomies are yet to pay attention to it.

He said themodel holds potential to become a key industry in Vietnam, as it will createjobs, boost growth, and ensure food security and safety.

AVBCPresident Laurence Strano said the Vietnamese and Australian economies havesupplemented each other to propel bilateral trade over the past 26 years.

The AVBC andVietnamese Government have sealed a number of agreements in aquaponics andlarge-scale aquatic farming, he added.

Stranoexpressed his hope to host Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc at a Vietnam –Australia business forum during his trip to Australia to attend theASEAN-Australia Special Summit in March 2018.

Formed in1996, the AVBC aims to promote the development of trade, commerce andinvestment between Australia and Vietnam and to facilitate communications andco-operation among its members, friends and governments.-VNA
