Hanoi (VNA) – A seminar on pooling ideas for thegreen development of Hanoi based on international and domestic experiences tookplace in the capital city on August 13.

According to Vice Director of the municipal Department ofNatural Resources and Environment, the event was held as part of the AmbitiousCity Promises project that Hanoi joined in October 2017. It aimed at sharinginitiatives that are being implemented in Seoul, the Republic of Korea, Hanoi,and other localities.

The seminar consisted of two sessions, with the first introducingan overview of Hanoi and the second focused on sharing experiences revolvingaround such prioritised areas as air quality improvement, efficient and sustainableuse of energy, urban planning, and waste management.

Participants discussed these topics in groups. Theysuggested the city cut its carbon dioxide emission, increase citizens’engagement in monitoring local air quality, among others ideas for the developmentof green home, office, transport.

The Ambitious City Promises project, led by the LocalGovernments for Sustainability (ICLEI), provides a model of effective climateaction at the community level, showing that cities can be both engines of growthand global leaders on climate action by establishing inclusive low emissionurban economies.

Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia have so far takenpart in the project.-VNA

🍌 Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

🧜 Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
