Hanoi (VNA) – A scientific seminar on land subsidencein the Mekong Delta – situation and solutions took place in Hanoi on December28.
In his opening speech, Deputy Minister of Natural Resourcesand Environment Vo Tuan Nhan said climate change, riverside landslide and land subsidenceare posing challenges to the Mekong Delta.
He called for adopting measures to limit underground waterexploitation and forming close collaboration between ministries and agencies inwater resources management, thus ensuring the sustainable development of waterresources in the Mekong Delta in response to climate change.
Deputy head of the Department of Science and TechnologyNguyen Thac Cuong said underground water exploitation and urbanisation areworsening land subsidence.
Statistics showed that land in the region has sunken by 18cmper year, or even over 30cm over the past 25 years, both in rural and urbanareas, which is yet to stop.
Experts and scientists suggested using satellite radars,geodesic solution, and Insar technology to monitor the problem.
Opinions at the event suggested measures to complete climatechange response scenarios in the Mekong Delta, including reviewing undergroundwater exploitation and hydrographical geology, continuing to apply monitoringresults in combination with other calculations, among others.-VNA
