Seminar discusses intellectual property

The event, jointly held by the VietnameseMinistry of Science and Technology and the World Intellectual PropertyOrganisation (WIPO), drew the participation of nearly 100 managers andexperts from the WIPO, Laos, Cambodia, the US, Japan and Vietnam.

Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tran Van Tung underlined theimportant role played by intellectual property in social development aswell as the performance of businesses.

He spoke of the fierce competition between enterprises and increasing intellectual property violations globally.

Pointing to overlaps in legal documents and authorities in dealingwith issues regarding intellectual property in Vietnam , thedelegates agreed that the problem can be addressed only when competentagencies coordinate with each other under a common mechanism.

They also raised the sparse content of legal documents on competition in Vietnam .

Sharing experiences in competition and the exercise of rights tointellectual property, the experts stressed the need for countries toincrease policy dialogue at an international level and partner with theWIPO and other international organisations in the field.

At the same time, the countries should bring into full play measuresand policies stipulating intellectual property rights, calculatingeconomic-social matters and each country’s development orientations,they said.-VNA
