Vietnamese track and field athletes got their fourth record at theongoing 28th SEA Games after the quartet won the women’s 4x200m eventwith a record breaking time of 3:31.46, smashing the previous record of3:35.53 established by Thailand in 1991.
The four were Nguyen Thi Oanh, Nguyen Thi Thuy Quach Thi Lan and Nguyen Thi Huyen.
Thailand took the silver with 3:36.82 and the bronze medal went to Malaysia, who finished the race in 3:39.10.
In the men’s 1500m event, Duong Van Thai successfully defended histitle. He just mixed in the leading group until the last turn into thestraight where he picked up his speed to race to the finish line after3:47.04 minutes.
Mervin Guarte of Phillipines came in second with 3:48.06 and Yothin Yaprajan of Thailand was third with 3:49.35.
Do Thi Thao met no real challenge when she coasted to the finish lineafter 4:28.39 minutes. Her teammate Nguyen Thi Phuong came in secondwith 4:31.59 and Thet Phyu War of Myanmar was third.
Track and field athletes also brought home another four silver medalsin the men’s high jump through Dao Van Thuy, the women’s 10000m throughPham Thi Hue, the women’s 1500m through Nguyen Thi Phuong and thewomen’s triple jump by Tran Hue Hoa.
Also thesame day, Vietnam took a silver medal at the women’s doubles event inpetanque, and another silver medal at the men’s 50m pistol team.
The country won six bronzes in athletics, cycling, petanque, shooting.
In volleyball, Vietnam beat Indonesia 3-2 in the women category tolead the group with five points. The team will next play Philippines inthe last match on June 13.
Meanwhile, Vietnam’smen volleyball team also had a good start with a 3-0 victory overIndonesia in the opening match. They will next play against Cambodia.
Onday six of the Games, Vietnam ranked second with 57 gold, 31 silver and50 bronze medals after the host Singapore with 66 golds, 58 silvers and69 bronzes.-VNA
