Khanh Hoa (VNA) – The 2016 Salangane Nest Festival took place on Hon Noi Island,ಞ which lies about 20 kilometres from Nha Trang city in central Khanh Hoa province, on June 14 or Lunar May 10.
The festival is held annually by the Khanh Hoa Salangane Nest Company to honour the founder and supporters of local edible bird nest production business.
A ritual ceremony was performed at the temple of Governor and Holy Mother of the Island to recall the nearly-690-year history of the industry. The festival also dedicated to individuals and organisations contributing to developing the salangane nest resources.
Legend has it that the Rear Admiral of the Tran Dynasty (1225-1440), Le Van Dat discovered edible bird nests on the Phu Binh Khang coastal waters (in Khanh Hoa province today) on his business trip to the South.
He later taught local people how to exploit the nests which earned him the title the founder of the industry.
The salangane lives in caves on limestone cliffs and makes nest using its own saliva. The nest is a popular but an expensive traditional dish which is believed to have health benefits.
Khanh Hoa is home to the largest salangane population in Vietnam.
The Khanh Hoa Salangane Nest Company has to date developed 169 salangane caves on 32 islands from 40 existing natural caves. The firm produces more than 3.4 tonnes of salangane nests every year.-VNA
A company based in the central province of Khanh Hoa was recently recognised as the owner of the biggest number of salangane islands and the highest yield of natural salangane nests in Asia.
A workshop was held in Nha Trang city on July 10 to identify ways to boost the production of salangane nests – a delicacy from the central province Khanh Hoa.
The central province of Khanh Hoa plans to designate 10,000 hectares to the establishment of five salangane nest villages by 2020, thus further promoting its bird nest brand at home and abroad.
The central coastal city of Nha Trang will hold several exciting cultural and sports activities during the 2015 Sea Festival, scheduled to take place from July 11-14.
The Vietnamese team will gather on June 26 in Ba Ria-Vung Tau, where they will train until July 14 before departing for Indonesia for the ASEAN U23 Championship 2025, which runs from July 15 to 29. Vietnam will face Laos on July 19 and Cambodia on July 22 in the group stage.

The U23 competition will run from June 16 to 22, followed by the U17 event from June 23 to 28, while athletes competing in the U23 category will undergo weight and skill checks ahead of the matches starting June 18, while similar checks for U17 athletes will take place before June 23.
Vietnam continues to sit just behind continental powerhouses Japan, the Republic of Korea, Australia, China, and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
