Leaders of Russia and Laos have sent greetings to Vietnamese leaders onthe 60th anniversary of the victory of Dien Bien Phu (May 7).
Inhis message to President Truong Tan Sang on May 7, Russian PresidentVladimir Putin described the victory as putting an end to a bloody warand liberating Vietnam from colonial rule.
President Putin statedthat during those years, the two countries forged a glorious traditionof the bilateral friendship, mutual assistance and fraternity which tothis day continues to serve as a foundation for the development of thebilateral comprehensive strategic partnership.
On May 5, the LaoPeople’s Revolutionary Party, National Assembly, Government and Frontfor National Construction all extended greetings to Vietnam’s CommunistParty, National Assembly, Government and Fatherland Front.
Themessage highlighted the triumph at Dien Bien Phu as a milestone in thehistory of the Vietnamese military and people under the leadership ofthe Party headed by President Ho Chi Minh.
The victory was aglobally significant event and a turning point in Vietnam’s revolution,leading to the signing of the 1954 Geneva Accord which restored peace inIndochina and officially recognised the independence, sovereignty,unity and territorial integrity of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, themessage read.
It also encouraged peace-loving people around theworld, and inspired oppressed nations in their struggles forindependence and freedom, they added.
The messages continuedby saying that over the past 60 years, Vietnam has unceasinglydeveloped, improving the lives of its people and enhancing its role andposition in the regional and international arenas.
