Hanoi (VNA) - There were 26 road accidents on the first day of the April 30 and May 1holidays, killing 14 people and injuring 12 others, the Traffic Police Departmentunder the Ministry of Public Security reported.
The number of accidents was up 37 percent year-on-year but fatalities were down 12 percent and injuriesdown 20 percent.
On the first day, policehandled 3,518 traffic violations, collecting 4.2 billion VND (179,700 USD) infines, while 86 waterway violations brought in 139 million VND (5,900 USD) infines.
Traffic congestionwas found on major routes to Hanoi such as Thang Long Avenue - Tran Duy Hung - KhuatDuy Tien, National Highway No. 5, roads to Thanh Tri Bridge, and the Hanoi - BacGiang and Hanoi - Hai Phong Expressways, and the intersection of Highway No. 8 -Ha Duy Phien from HCM City to Binh Duong province./.
The numbers of traffic accidents and related deaths and injured cases plunged in November, helping to drag the 11-month figures down from the same period last year, according to the National Traffic Safety Committee.
HCM City hopes to reduce traffic accidents, fatalities and injuries by 5-10 percent this year, said Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong, who is also head of the city Traffic Safety Board.
