The World Bank (WB) in Vietnam and the Committee for Ethnic Minority Affairs (CEMA) held a workshop in Hanoi on May 21 to announce the research results on factors affecting the socio-economic development of ethnic minority groups in Vietnam.

Hanoi (VNA) – The World Bank (WB) in Vietnamand the Committee for Ethnic Minority Affairs (CEMA) held a workshop inHanoi on May 21 to announce the research results on factors affecting the socio-economicdevelopment of ethnic minority groups in Vietnam.
According to the study, infrastructure andeconomic connectivity, as well as market linkages and opportunities to join thelabour market are the main factors that enable certain ethnic minority groups toobtain a higher level of development than others.
Other factors include the availability of meansof production, access to education and healthcare services, traditionalinstitutions and local governance, gender relationships, ethnic conceptions,and the ability to access external support.
The research also suggested some useful policieswith focus on investment in supporting production and building capacity,accessing the labour market, empowering women in conducting business, andreducing prejudice and social discrimination.
Minister and Chairman of the CEMADo Van Chien highly appreciated the prompt support of the WB and the AustralianEmbassy in Vietnam in coordinating with the committee to make in-depth researchon factors that directly affect the socio-economic life of ethnic minoritygroups.
The information and analysis results of theresearch are very useful for ethnic policy making and management, especiallywhen the CEMA is entrusted by the Government to coordinate with relevantministries and departments to elaborate an overall scheme on socio-economicdevelopment amongst ethnic minorities, and mountainous and disadvantagedregions post-2020.
Ousmane Dione, Director of the World Bank inVietnam, said that from this research, there are many opportunities to furtherimprove the agenda to increase social integration by actively adopting a newapproach to the development of ethnic minority areas.
Vietnam can count on the support of the WorldBank to integrate this programme into transport and infrastructure investmentprojects in rural and mountainous areas, as well as diversify agriculture andimplement national target programmes, he added.–VNA
