The 70 th anniversary of Traditional Day of Vietnam People’s Public Security Force and the 10 th “All people protect national security” Festival are being observed at Vietnamese embassies in many countries. Speaking at a ceremony in the Vietnamese embassy in Washington, US on August 19, Ambassador Pham Quang Vinh reviewed the history of the public security force and its achievements over the past 70 years, saying that it has contributed tremendously to protecting national security and social order and maintaining a peaceful environment for national construction and development. The diplomat also highlighted the success of the “All people protect national security” Festival, which has encouraged the public to get involved in fighting crimes and social evils.
Vietnam has formed security and law enforcement partnerships with 55 countries and territories, and joined 22 organisations and international cooperation forums, which have strengthened friendship and coordination between Vietnam and countries, he added. In recent years, Vietnamese and US law enforcement agencies have scored a great deal of successes in their cooperation to fight terrorism, drug and cyber crimes. The US’s visit by Vietnamese Minister of Public Security Tran Dai Quang in March 2015 marked a new level of progress in the bilateral security ties. In his speech, Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Non-proliferation Thomas Countryman hailed bilateral security links as a significant component of the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership. According to him, the bilateral relationship has been growing over the past 20 years, evidenced by the recent visits by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and US Secretary of State John Kerry.
Highlighting joint security and law enforcement works, including the signing of the 123 agreement on civil nuclear cooperation and the participation in Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), he vowed continued support to Vietnam in the field, particularly in personnel training. He believed that security collaboration between the two countries will further progress in the time ahead. The event was also graced by the presence of Assistant Secretary of Defence for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs David Shear and representatives from the US Departments of State, Defence and Homeland Security.
Similar celebrations were also held in Malaysia, the Republic of Korea and Cuba on August 18-19.-VNA
