Programme targets better maritime health care

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has signed a document to issue a decision approving the national programme on sea, island medical development by 2030.

Hanoi (VNA) – Deputy Prime Minister TranHong Ha has signed a document to issue a decision approving the national programme on sea,island medical development by 2030.

The programme’s objective is to consolidate andimprove the quality of medical services for soldiers and residents in islandlocalities, contributing to achieving targets set in the Strategy forSustainable Development of Vietnam's Sea-based Economy by 2030, with a visiontowards 2045.

By 2025, 40% of the hospitals and medicalcentres in island districts will be able to perform surgical operations using the techniques like those of a Level-2 hospital. Meanwhile, up to 70% of provincial and municipal diseasecontrol centres, health centres of cities, towns and districts, and militarypreventive health facilities in the coastal provinces will be upgraded. The numbersare expected to reach 70% and 100%, respectively by 2030.

By 2025, 70% of the offshore fishing boats will be equippedwith medicine cabinets and medical tools, and 80% of ocean-going ships willfollow international regulations on maritime medicine. Some 80% of the islandresidents will also be equipped with knowledge and skills of health care.  All of the figures are set to rise to 100%after five years.

To that end, the programme has set out majorsolutions: enhancing the leadership and instruction over maritime medicine;consolidating and strengthening preventive healthcare capacity in sea andisland areas; consolidating and improving medical check-up and treatment capacity;raising first-aid and patient transportation capacity; developing a contingentof health workers for sea and island areas; building specific norms andstandards for maritime medicine; and stepping up the communications work andhealth education for island residents.

Regulations and plans on coordination betweenemergency centres of such coastal localities as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Khanh Hoaand Ba Ria-Vung Tau, and maritime search and rescue centres, naval force, coastguards and border guards will be outlined, according to the programme.

Naval force, coast guards, border guards and search andrescue ships will also get medical equipment.

The Prime Minister has assigned the Ministry ofHealth and the Ministry of National Defence to put forth specific tasks andpresent them to competent agencies for approval, or approve them within their power./.

𝔉 Sharp tobacco tax hike urged to safeguard youths, community health

A 2023 report by the Vietnam Health Economics Association estimated that the total cost of tobacco-related healthcare and economic losses reached 108 trillion VND (4.14 billion USD) annually – equivalent to 1.14% of GDP and five times higher than the budget revenue generated by the tobacco industry.

ღ Vietnam, France collaborate in vaccine production technology transfer

Under the agreement, VNVC and Sanofi will gradually implement technology transfers to enable domestic production of several key Sanofi vaccines that are widely used in Vietnam. In addition, Sanofi will support VNVC in training human resources and quality management in vaccine research and manufacturing.
