Programme on gas emission and deforestation reduction gets approved

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has approved a national programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation to 2030.

Hanoi (VNA) – PrimeMinister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has approved a national programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation andForest Degradation to 2030.

The project aims to lower greenhouse emissions through limiting forestdegradation, enhancing sustainable forest management and protectingbiodiversity. It is also expected to assist with the implementation of thenational strategy on climate change and tackle poverty.

It is designed to raise the forest coverage to 45 percent,contribute to achieving the national target of reducing greenhouse emissions by8 percent with domestic resources and up to 25 percent with internationalsupport by 2030.
Forest land across the country is hoped to reach 16.24 million hectaresby 2020.

To achieve the targets, the project will provide technical support insustainable and deforestation-free agriculture and aquaculture whileimproving forest governance and livelihoods for people living near and in theforest.

In addition, it willhelp enhance the economic environment for forestry.

Set to be carried outacross the country between 2017 and 2030, the programme will prioritise areas whichare hotspots of deforestation and forest degradation, as well as regions whichare affected by climate change and have the potential for forest carbon stockenhancement.-VNA

🍌 Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

🐬 Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
