Hanoi (VNA) – President Tran Dai Quang on June 28hosted a reception for President of the Republic of Nauru Baron Divavesi Waqa,who is in Vietnam to attend the sixth Global Environment Facility Assembly (GEF6).

Appreciating the attendance of President Waqa and the Naurudelegation at the GEF 6, President Quang congratulated Nauru on assuming theGEF Presidency and the position as President of the group of Pacific islandcountries.

Vietnam always keeps a close watch on the situation in Nauruand countries in South Pacific, the Vietnamese State leader said, expressinghis wish that under the leadership of President Waqa, Nauru will continue toprosper.

Vietnam always attaches importance to promoting thefriendship with Nauru, he affirmed.

Talking about measures to enhance the bilateral ties,President Quang stressed that Vietnam is willing to share experience with Nauruin the areas of the two countries’ potential like fisheries, agriculture,tourism and mining.

The leader welcomed Nauru delegations to Vietnam to exchangeexperience and promote cooperation, especially in the spheres that Vietnam isstrong in such as rice cultivation, industrial tree planting, aquaculture andtelecommunications.

The two countries’ leaders should utilise multilateralforums to hold meetings in order to reinforce mutual trust and understanding,President Quang suggested.

He also urged the two sides to reach cooperation agreementsin such realms as economy, national security and defence, education, tourismand agriculture to create legal frameworks for bilateral collaboration.

The host proposed Nauru soon send a non-resident ambassadorto Vietnam and pledged that Vietnam will consider dispatching a non-residentambassador to the country.

He used this occasion to thank Nauru for urging the Asia-PacificGroup to approve the nomination of Vietnam as the group’s candidacy for anon-permanent seat at the UN Security Council for 2020-2021.


Vietnam and Nauru should establish several cooperationframeworks and share each other’s stance on regional and international issuesof mutual concern, including climate change, food security and natural disasterrelief, President Quang said.

For his part, President Baron Divavesi Waqa highly valuedVietnam’s initiatives at the GEF 6, as well as socio-economic achievements thecountry has recorded over the past time.

Nauru prioritises cooperation with Vietnam in fisheries,food security and technical worker training, the President said.

He emphasised that Nauru will soon issue an officialdocument affirming its support for Vietnam’s bid to run for a non-permanentseat at the UN Security Council for 2020-2021.-VNA
