The death toll from the typhoon in the Philippines has climbed to 208, making it one of the most destructive storms hitting the country in recent years. Local police said that at least 239 others are injured, while 52 remain missing after the storm ravaged the southern and central regions of the country.
The Philippine Government reported that the storm has affected about 780,000 people, including more than 300,000 people and tourists having to flee from their homes and beachfront resorts.
The storm disrupted communication and power supply networks in at least 227 cities./.
The death toll from Typhoon Rai - the strongest storm to hit the Philippines this year - has risen to at least 75, according to official statistics announced by local authorities on December 19.
As typhoon Rai is changing its moving direction in the waters to the northwest of Truong Sa archipelago, coastal localities are bracing for the impacts of the super typhoon.
Typhoon Rai, the ninth storm to hit Vietnam in the East Sea, was about 200km to the east-northeast of Ly Son island of the central coastal province of Quang Ngai at 4am on December 20, with gust near the eye of the storm reaching 200 km per hour, according to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.
