President of Argentina begins State visit to Vietnam

Hanoi (VNA) - Presidentof Argentina Mauricio Macri and his spouse started their State visit to Vietnamfrom February 19-21 to deepen the bilateral strategic partnership.
This is the first visit to Vietnam by Mauricio Macri as President of Argentina.It will be an important milestone in the bilateral relationship, especiallyafter the two countries celebrated the 45th anniversary of their diplomaticties last year.
The three-day trip, whichcomes at the invitation of President Nguyen Phu Trong, also demonstrates theimportance of Vietnam in Argentina’s external policy towards Asia in generaland Southeast Asia in particular, especially after the Latin American nationsigned the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) with the Association ofSoutheast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in August 2018.
Vietnam and Argentinaestablished diplomatic ties on October 25, 1973. Since then, both sides haveorganised regular delegation exchanges.
The countries haveestablished numerous mechanisms to boost multi-faceted cooperation. They havealso signed various agreements to encourage investment, economic-tradecooperation, scientific-technological cooperation, cultural-educational cooperationand collaboration in the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
Vietnam and Argentinahave also supported each other at multilateral forums such as the UnitedNations, the World Trade Organisation, the Forum for East Asia-Latin AmericaCooperation (FEALAC) and the South-South Cooperation within the UN framework.
Two-way trade increasedfrom 1.4 billion USD in 2013 to 2.9 billion USD last year — the highest figurebetween Argentina and any Southeast Asian country.
Argentina is Vietnam’s second largest trade partner in Latin America, while Vietnamis its fifth biggest import market globally. The two sides are working to raisebilateral trade to 5 billion USD as soon as possible.-VNA
The Vietnam-Argentina Inter-governmental Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation held its 6th meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on October 25 and 26.
The People’s Committee of the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho held a working session with Argentine Ambassador to Vietnam Juan Carlos Valle Raleigh on December 6 to discuss cooperation prospects between the city and Argentine partners.

During the negotiations, the US highly evaluated Vietnam’s goodwill and efforts, affirmed its appreciation for the bilateral relationship, acknowledged Vietnam’s proposals and concerns, and considered these an important basis for continuing discussions and moving towards a final agreement.
The Chairman stressed the need for stricter fiscal discipline, faster digital transformation, and more efficient management of State budget revenues and expenditures.
