US President Donald Trump arrived in Hanoi on the afternoon of November 11, beginning his two-day State visit to Vietnam at the invitation of President Tran Dai Quang.

This is the US President’s first visit to Vietnam, which is made in the firstyear of his working tenure. It demonstrates the importance the US has given toits relations with Vietnam, and is expected to create a foundation to fosterthe bilateral ties in the coming time.
The visit is taking place at a timewhen the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership is progressing, especially afterthe US visit by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc in May 2017. The two sides havemaintained exchanges of delegations and have actively been implementingagreements reached during the visit.
Vietnam and the US established diplomatic ties on July 12, 1995.
Positive strides have been recorded in bilateralrelations in all spheres since the countries established a comprehensivepartnership in July 2013 on the basis of respecting each other’s territorialintegrity, political regime and development path, for the sake of their owninterests and for regional peace, stability and development cooperation.
Since 2005, the US has become one of the leadingtrade partners of Vietnam, with two-way trade rising 20 percent in recentyears.
As of November 2016, the US ranked 8th out of112 foreign investors in Vietnam with 815 projects worth 10.07 billion USD. TheUS was the ninth largest market of Vietnamese investors with 147 projectstotaling 571.38 million USD.
The number of US tourists to Vietnam reached552,700 in 2016, a year-on-year rise of 12.8 percent.-VNA
Vietnam expects the US to accelerate the ratification of an agreement on double taxation avoidance and facilitate negotiations for a governmental agreement on cooperation and assistance between customs agencies, said a high-ranking official.
On the occasion of US President Donald Trump’s tour of Asia, as well as his attendance in the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and State visit to Vietnam, the Vietnam News Agency's resident correspondent in Washington D.C had an interview with David Shear, former US Ambassador to Vietnam and former Assistant Secretary of Defense. Highlighting the transformative potential of the draft law in revitalising Vietnam’s railway industry, Hoang Van Cuong, a deputy of Hanoi, expressed his support for Article 39, which empowers the Prime Minister to issue a list of railway-related goods and services to be assigned or ordered from domestic enterprises for production.
According to the Ministry of Public Security, Hoan, formerly Deputy Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, is under investigation for allegedly taking bribes in connection with a case involving the Hoang Long Construction and Manpower Supply JSC and related units.
