The magnitude-6.1 quake struck at a depth of just10 kilometres and its epicentre was 181km southeast of the provincialcapital Banda Aceh, the US Geological Survey was quoted as saying.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where tectonicplates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

Aceh, on the northern tip of Sumatra, is regularly hit by quakes.-VNA
