Bangkok (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his entourage arrivedin Bangkok, Thailand, on June 15 afternoon for the 8th Ayeyawady-ChaoPhraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy Summit (ACMECS 8) and the 9thCambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Vietnam Summit (CLMV 9).

The Prime Minister was welcomed by Thai Minister of Digital Economy and SocietyPichet Durongkaveroj, officials from the Thai Foreign Ministry, Vietnamese Ambassadorto Thailand Nguyen Hai Bang and the Vietnamese people community in Thailand.

PM Phuc is scheduled to meet with his Thai counterpart Prayut Chan-ocha andwitness the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Kasikorn Bank andthe Vietnamese Ministry of Planning and Investment’s Enterprise DevelopmentAgency later the day. He will also meet with some large enterprises ofThailand.

On June 16, he will attend the opening ceremony of the ACMECS 8 and the CLMV 9.He will have meetings with some foreign leaders on the sidelines of the event.

ACMECS is a cooperation framework amongst Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand andVietnam to utilise the member countries’ diverse strengths and to promotebalanced development in the sub-region. It was established in April 2003 underthe initiative of then Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Vietnam officially joined the summit in 2004 during the first ACMECS ministers’meeting, which was held in Thailand in November that year.

The CLMV is an open cooperation mechanism aiming to promote potential andadvantages of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam, and call for support fromother ASEAN countries as well as partners for the four countries.
