Planning conference for peacekeeping field training held in Hanoi

The Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations on March 1 held the final planning conference for end-of-term field training under the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM Plus) Experts’ Working Group on Peacekeeping Operations Cycle 4 (2021 - 2023).

Hanoi (VNA) – The VietnamDepartment of Peacekeeping Operations on March 1 held the final planningconference for end-of-term field training under the ASEAN DefenceMinisters’ Meeting Plus (ADMM Plus) Experts’ Working Group on PeacekeepingOperations Cycle 4 (2021 - 2023).

The Hanoi meeting was co-chairedby Col. Nguyen Nhu Canh, Deputy Director of the department and head of theVietnamese experts’ working group on peacekeeping operations, and MatsuzawaTomoko, Director for defence cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region at theJapanese Defence Ministry and head of the Japanese experts’ working group.

Participants discussed specialisedand technical issues related to the final planning and a visit to the venue ofthe end-of-term field training as part of the ADMM Plus scheduled totake place in Vietnam in September 2023.

The coordination with Japan toco-chair the ADMM Plus Experts’ Working Group on Peacekeeping Operations Cycle4 is said to have continued affirming Vietnam’s role, reputation, stature, andcontributions to the multilateral cooperation mechanisms on UN peacekeepingoperations in the region, and also helped enhance cooperation among the membercountries of the ADMM Plus.

Activities during the co-chairmanshiphave also helped strengthen defence ties, including in peacekeeping operations,between Vietnam and Japan.

On September 15, 2015, the twocountries’ defence ministries signed a memorandum of understanding oncooperation in UN peacekeeping operations, laying the foundation for promotingbilateral collaboration in this regard.

In theTriangular Partnership Programme (TPP), Japan is the main sponsor and theUN Department of Operational Support holds the chair, with the Northeast Asian providing funding fortraining, equipment, and peacekeeping capacity building for a third party.

In particular, Japan and Vietnamsuccessfully held two training courses on heavy engineering equipment operationunder the TPP in 2019 and 2020./.
