Phu Yen strengthens solid, plastic waste management

The People’s Committee of central Phu Yen province and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Vietnam held a conference on June 18 to discuss strengthening the management of domestic solid and plastic wastes in the locality.

Phu Yen (VNA) – The People’s Committee of centralPhu Yen province and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Vietnam held aconference on June 18 to discuss strengthening the management of domestic solidand plastic wastes in the locality.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Director of the provincialDepartment of Natural Resources and Environment Le Dao An Xuan said Phu Yen hastaken a number of measures to collect and treat solid wastes over the pastyears. The province also called for investing in waste treatment factoriesusing advanced technologies.

Le Huu Nam, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of XuanYen ward, Song Cau township, said since early 2019, 224 households in the wardhave joined a pilot model to collect waste discharged from aquaculture on XuanDai Bay, which initially raised their awareness of the danger of wastes onmarine environment.

He also suggested spreading the model to mitigate thedischarge of plastic wastes at sea.

Coordinator of the WWF Vietnam Oceans Programme Nguyen DieuThuy said the WWF Vietnam is working with the province to devise a plan on plasticwaste and ocean plastic management till 2030, as well as hold a competitioncollecting initiatives in the field and launch an awareness campaign.

She said the WWF Vietnam pledges to partner with Phu Yen toturn Tuy Hoa into a plastic waste-free urban area.

Concluding the event, permanent Vice Chairman of theprovincial People’s Committee Nguyen Chi Hien said the province strives to cutplastic wastes by 30 percent by 2025.

On the occasion, the provincial authorities, the WWF Vietnamand the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment signed an agreement toengage in a plastic waste management project in Vietnam./.

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

ꦅ Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
