Phu Bai International Airport to be expanded

Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung has assigned the Ministry of Transport to conduct detailed research for the expansion of Phu Bai International Airport in the central province of Thua Thien - Hue. ​

Hanoi (VNA) – Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung has assigned the Ministryof Transport to conduct detailed research for the expansion of Phu BaiInternational Airport in the central province of Thua Thien - Hue.

The airport was built in 1940and only has one 2.7km long runway.

Since 2015, passenger rate has grown between 12 and 18 percent each year.

In 2019, the number of passengers using the airport reached nearlytwo million, 500,000 more than its designed capacity.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam is proposing to invest 1.67 trillion VND(71.5 million USD) to extend the runway and upgrade taxiways over the next fiveyears.

The aviation authority said the investment does not include thefund for land clearance which would be divided into a sub-project implementedby the locality where the airport based.

The airport is located on National Highway 1A in the province'sHuong Thuy town. It plays an important role in the economic, cultural, socialand defence strategy of Thua Thien-Hue and the northern-central region and iscrucial to promoting tourism in Hue city and the entire central region./.
