Photo contest highlights importance of natural conservation

An award ceremony was held in Hanoi on August 25 for a photo contest with the theme of natural conservation and development by the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment (ISPONRE) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, provincial Departments of Natural Resources and Environment, and photo clubs.

Hanoi (VNA) – An award ceremony was held in Hanoi on August25 for a photo contest with the theme of natural conservation and developmentby the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment(ISPONRE) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, provincial Departmentsof Natural Resources and Environment, and photo clubs.

Titled “Submerged Land: Conservation and Development”, the contest camewithin the framework of a joint project between the ministry and the UnitedNations Development Programme. The sides are looking for ways to support theprovinces of Thai Binh and Thua Thien – Hue in establishing two submerged landconservation areas.

The nearly 400 entries by over 100 photographers to the contest convey amessage on the beauty and role of submerged land in the social life of thelocal communities. The organizing board selected 50 works for display, and gaveaway one first prize, two second and three third.

The contest aims to raise awareness of policymakers and localcommunities on the importance of submerged land in the life and the ways toearn living of locals, strengthen and diversify the communication forms in theprotection of the environment and the biological diversity, as well as thesubmerged land ecology, organizers said.

Vietnam is now home to over 10 million hectares of submerged land whichoccupies about 30 percent of the country’s total area and is scattered in everyecological area of Vietnam. This kind of land plays a crucial role in foodsecurity and economic activities of various sectors. However, over the recentyears, the natural submerged land has been shrunk seriously as a result of thereclamation activities by locals who are trying to turn the land into farms andfields.-VNA

🔴 Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

🔜 Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
