Philippines withdraws from hosting 2019 SEA Games

The Philippines has pulled out of hosting the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, as its Government decided to use the sport funding for re-building conflict-hit areas in Marawi.

Hanoi (VNA) - The Philippines has pulled out of hosting the 2019 SoutheastAsian (SEA) Games, as its Government decided to use the sport funding for re-buildingconflict-hit areas in Marawi.

Thedecision was made following various meetings between sports officials and PresidentRodrigo Duterte and Sports Commission Chairman William Ramirez.

Thecountry last hosted SEA Games in 2005. It accepted to become the host of SEAGames 2019 in 2015, after the post was begged off by two other countries.

Clashes between the army and militants linked to theself-claimed Islamic State (IS) have taken place in Marawi city with over200,000 people for more than two months, claiming more than 550 lives.-VNA
