Hanoi (VNA) - The Philippines commissioned intoservice two more Japan-made patrol ships on March 28, bringing to eight thenumber of vessels added to its coast guard fleet.
During the ceremony held at the Philippine Coast Guardheadquarters in Manila, the two ships were christened BRP Cape San Agustin andBRP Cabra.
They are built for an average operating cruising speed of 46kmper hour and can detect other vessels up to 1,500 nautical miles away, makingthem a valuable addition to a coast guard fleet patrolling the territorialwaters of the immense Philippine archipelago of more than 7,000 islands.
Speaking at the event, Japanese Ambassador to thePhilippines Koji Haneda said Japan has delivered eight vessels to thePhilippines and expects the remaining two to arrive within a few months, addingthat Japan will also be providing four smaller inflatable, rigid hull boats.
Earlier on March 26, Japan donated three second-hand maritimesurveillance planes TC90 to the Philippines to improve the capacity of itsnaval forces.-VNA
