Philippines ready for 14th Security Policy Conference

The Philippines has sped up preparation for the 14th ASEAN Security Policy Conference (ASPC 14), part of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), which will be held in Manila, the Philippines on June 29.

Manila (VNA) – ThePhilippines has sped up preparation for the 14th ASEAN Security PolicyConference (ASPC 14), part of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), which will beheld in Manila, the Philippines on June 29.

Defence officials from 27 ARF memberswill attend the event to exchange views on important security issues in theregion.

Vietnam’s delegation is led bySenior Lieutenant General Pham Ngoc Minh, Deputy Chief of the General Staff ofthe Vietnam People’s Army, who is expected to deliver a speech at theconference.

Security has been tightened atall streets to Manila Hotel, where the ASPC 14 is taking place in order toensure safety for all delegates. A large number of security personnel, counter-terrorismpolice and police dogs have been deployed to examine all vehicles and peoplearound the venue.

The ASPC 14 will share internationaland regional defence views, evaluating the development of reserved securityforces amid new and complicated security issues as well as reconsideringregional security structure.

Besides, the conference will alsodiscuss emerging issues like international terrorism and maritime security,among others.

The ARF was established in July1994 in Thailand. Its members include 10 ASEAN countries and 10 dialoguepartners (Australia, Canada, China, India, the EU, Japan, New Zealand, theRepublic of Korea, Russia and the US) and one observer (Papua New Guinea),along with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Mongolia, Pakistan,Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Timor Leste.-VNA
