Vietnam is likely to achieve its target ofexporting 180,000 tonnes of pepper in 2017 due to the globe’s surging demand,he said.
The Lam Sang Pepper Cooperative in the southernprovince of Dong Nai exported 300 tonnes of clean pepper to Germany and Europein the first half of 2017, doubling the same period last year, Director NguyenNgoc Luan reported.
The demands from such choosy markets are hugeand they are ready to order 5,000 tonnes of pepper each year, he said, notingthat the most important thing is to ensure the high quality of products ratherthan expanding the pepper growing area.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture andRural Development, Vietnam is home to 140,000 hectares of pepper, surpassing by90,000 hectares as planned through 2020.
Currently, the area for growing pepper isincreasing out of control.
Luan advised both businesses and farmers to paymore attention to manufacturing techniques and studying the market’s demands.
At present, Vietnamese pepper is ranked afterIndian product in terms of quality and brand, but it could compete against thatfrom Indonesia, Malaysia and Cambodia, he said.
He added that his cooperative has provided 5,000tonnes of clean pepper to Europe over the past three year, and moves to supplyfor Japan in the time ahead.-VNA
