Party official: Vietnam expects more assistance from IMF

Vietnam expects that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will continue cooperating closely with the country and provide it with more assistance, training and policy consultancy, said a senior Party official.

Hanoi (VNA) - Vietnam expects that the InternationalMonetary Fund (IMF) will continue cooperating closely with the country andprovide it with more assistance, training and policy consultancy, said a seniorParty official.

Nguyen Van Binh, Politburo member and Chairman of the Communist Party ofVietnam Central Committee’s Commission for Economic Affairs, expressed the wishduring a reception in Hanoi on December 13 for an IMF delegation led by AlexMourmouras, who is division chief in the IMF’s Asia and Pacific Departmentwhere he has served as mission chief for Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia. 

Whileacknowledging the outcomes of earlier working sessions between the IMF delegationand relevant ministries and agencies of Vietnam, Binh spoke highly of theeffective and practical cooperation between Vietnam and the IMF in the recentpast, especially in banking-finance policy consultancy.

Havingapplauded the delegation’s assessment of Vietnam’s economic situation, he saidVietnam will continue to prioritise stabilising macro-economy, curbinginflation, enhancing the economy’s productivity, quality, effectiveness, self-relianceand competitiveness, improving the investment-business environment, boostingeconomic growth and restructuring the economy in combination with renovating itsgrowth model.

Mourmouras highly evaluated Vietnam’s impressive growth in 2018 and congratulatedthe country on successfully maintaining macro-economic stability, controllinginflation, stabilising the exchange rate and bettering the business environment.

Exchanging views on impacts from global trade disputes and the world’seconomic prospects, the IMF official commended the Vietnamese Party and State’spolicy on stabilising macro-economy and renewing growth model, especially thenation’s priorities and socio-economic targets for the coming time.

The IMF will continue to cooperate with and assist Vietnam in thedevelopment process, he affirmed.-VNA
