Hanoi (VNA) – Deputies of the 14th National Assembly on October 23 electedNguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, as the StatePresident for the 2016-2021 tenure during their on-going sixth session in Hanoi.

Right after the resultof the vote, conducted in the morning the same day, was announced in theafternoon, the new President had a swearing-in ceremony at the NA hall, vowingto stay absolutely loyal to the nation, people and the Constitution of theSocialist Republic of Vietnam, and to exert every effort to complete allmissions assigned by the Party, State and people.

Speaking after theceremony, he said that the new position is both a great honour and a heavyresponsibility, and pledged to work hard to fulfill the promises he had made.Noting that althoughVietnam has reaped great achievements but is still facing many challenges,including the unpredictable developments in the world situation and the heavy workloadinside the country, especially the preparations for the 13th PartyCongress, he expressed his hope for broad support from leaders and formerleaders of the Party, State, the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF), NA deputies,voters and people, as well as coordination from the NA, Government and VFFagencies, socio-political organisations, judicial bodies, and localities.

On behalf of theParty, State, NA, Government and the VFF, NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, PrimeMinister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh, and President ofthe VFF Central Committee Tran Thanh Man presented flowers to the newPresident.-VNA
