Number of scrap containers stuck at ports reduced by half

Hanoi (VNA) –ܫ As many as 10,102 scrap containers were held up atVietnamese ports as of mid-September, a fall of 10,852 containers as comparedto the end of 2018, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs.
The reduction is attributable to the strong instructionand drastic measures taken by relevant ministries and agencies.
In a bid to effectively handle the huge backlog of imported scrap, the customsforce and the Ministry of Finance recommended the Government to issue acoordination mechanism to control imported scrap at border gates and portsnationwide.
With toxic waste and scrap which fail to meet Vietnam’s import requirement, thefinance ministry suggested the Government to require their shipping companiesto transport the batches out of Vietnamese territory within 30 days afterreceiving notice from the Vietnam Customs.
ꦬ In case the companies do not follow the notice, the Ministry of Transportshould take coercion measures or even stop granting permission for ships toenter or leave Vietnamese ports./.
As many as 158 individuals and organisations have been found illegally importing scrap into Vietnam as they are not certified to carry out such activities.
The import of scrap to use as material for production through road and railway border gates will be banned in Vietnam from February 22, according to a circular freshly issued by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
As of June, more than 500 containers of waste which failed to meet Vietnam’s import requirements had been re-exported this year, said the Vietnam Maritime Administration on August 11.
