Northern Vietnam forecast to suffer powerful cold spell
A powerful cold spell is forecast to hit the northern and north-central regions from December 17, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF).

Hanoi (VNA)🌳 – A powerful cold spell is forecast to hit the northern andnorth-central regions from December 17, according to the National Centre forHydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF).
The cold spell is predicted to last around fivedays. The temperature in the mountainousareas is projected to range from 3 to 5 degrees Celsius, even below zero in someplaces, with the possibility of frost in the nights of December 18-22. The peak of the cold wave will fall on December18 when the northern region is engulfed by cold wave and dry air. Thetemperature in Hanoi will be 11-13 degrees on that day and will increase to16-19 degrees from December 19-22, thecentre said.
To proactively cope withthe extreme cold spell, the Standing Office of the National Steering Committee forNatural Disaster Prevention and Control has requested localities in the northern and north-central regions to take measures to ensure safety for people,especially the elderly and children.
Residents are recommended to not use coal-burningstoves for heating in closed rooms as well as protect livestock and animalsfrom hunger and cold.

The temperature in the resort town of Sapa in the northern province of Lao Cai dropped to 7.7 degrees Celsius in the early morning of December 6, the lowest since the beginning of this winter.
The strongest cold spell of this winter is likely to occur in January 2023, said Nguyen Van Huong, head of the weather forecast division under the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
The northern region is forecast to be warmer during day time, reaching 22 degrees Celsius at the highest, between December 13 and 16, just ahead of a strong cold spell.
