Can Tho (VNA) – Na🌠tional Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan has asked the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho to combine economic development with environmental protection.
She made the request at an August 6 working session with the municipal Party Committee’s Standing Board to give her feedback on its draft report on the city’s ten-year implementation of the Politburo’s resolution on building and developing Can Tho in the context of national industrialisation and modernisation.
In the next five years, Can Tho should review its planning in the fields of education, health care and transport to match it with the Mekong Delta’s planning, the top legislator noted while mentioning solutions set forth in the report.
She also emphasised the need to clarify coordination between the municipal Party Committee, authorities and relevant ministries and agencies in actualising the resolution.
Industrial development must be carried out in tandem with rural building and agricultural production towards modernity, the NA Chairwoman said, stressing the role of orchard tourism and regional connectivity in rural economic development.
The report should make comparisons of achievements the city has recorded before and after the effectuation of the resolution, and between Can Tho and other two centrally-run cities of Hai Phong and Da Nang.
The chief legislator urged the Standing Board to trace the root causes of limitations in the work in order to define whether the problem lies with the document or the implementation process.
Resolution No 45-NQ/TW dated February 17, 2005 lays out orientations and tasks for Can Tho city by 2020.
Accordingly, Can Tho aims to become a civilised, modern, green and clean national-level city, deserving a gateway of the lower Mekong region.
It is also set to be a centre of industry, trade, services, tourism, education-training, science-technology, health care and culture that holds a strategic position in national defence and security of the Mekong Delta region and the nation at large.
The city is expected to lead the country in industrialisation and modernisation, and become a first-tier city before 2010 and basically turn into an industrialised locality by 2020.
NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan visited the Vinh Long University of Technology Education, one of the five educational institutions training vocational teachers nationwide.
She urged the university to make greater efforts to contribute to training high-quality human resources for the Mekong Delta region, thus serving the national industrialisation and modernisation./.
Export and foreign currency services are expected to bring 1.65 billion USD for Mekong delta Can Tho city this year, according to the city’s Department of Industry and Trade.
