Myanmar to form independent inquiry commission on Rakhine issue

Myanmar has decided to establish an independent commission of inquiry as part of its initiative to achieve reconciliation, peace and development in the western state of Rakhine, according to an announcement of the President's Office. ​

Hanoi (VNA) - Myanmar has decided toestablish an independent commission of inquiry as part of its initiative toachieve reconciliation, peace and development in the western state of Rakhine,according to an announcement of the President's Office.

Taking into consideration of the InterimRecommendations of the Advisory Board for the Committee for the Implementationof the Recommendations on Rakhine state, the independent commission willinvestigate the violation of human rights and related issues following theterror attacks by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA).

The commission will be made up of threemembers including an international figure and will be assisted by national andinternational legal experts, the announcement said on May 31.

The Myanmar government has reiterated that ifthere is any violation of human rights by the security forces in Myanmar withfirm evidence, investigation will be made and action will be taken according tolaw. It also objected the attempted reference of Myanmar to the InternationalCriminal Court to which Myanmar is neither a member nor a signatory.

The ARSA extremist terrorists launched attacks on police outposts inMyanmar's Rakhine state on Aug. 25 last year, displacing about 700,000 Rohingyapeople to neighbouring Bangladesh. -VNA
