Hanoi (VNA) – At least 18ꦫ,500Rohingya in Rakhine state of Myanmar have fled into Bangladesh in the last sixdays since fighting broke out between government military and insurgents.

About 18,500 people have crossed intoBangladesh as of the night of August 29, said Chris Lom, spokesman of theInternational Organisation for Migration in Asia-Pacific, on August 30. He added that exact figures were difficultto obtain because many of those who have made it into Bangladesh might not registerwith local authorities. Meanwhile, many people were stuck at the border. Clashes between Myanmar army and insurgentsoccurred last week as gunmen attacked 24 police posts and broke into a militaryoutpost in Rakhine on August 24. To date, at least 110 people were killed.

Rohingya people are not recognised as anethnic minority group in Myanmar and are called Bengalis or illegal immigrantsfrom Bangladesh. Many Rohingya people fled from Rakhine to Myanmar’sneighbouring countries after the military launched operations againstinsurgents who attacked border outposts. The attackers were accused of beingmembers of the Rohingya Solidarity Organisation, a small armed group operating sincethe 1980s.-VNA
