Beijing (VNA)🅠 - Myanmar State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi held talks with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in Beijing on August 18, as part of her first visit to China since the Southeast Asian nation's new government, led by her National League for Democracy party, took office on April 1.
At the meeting, Premier Li spoke of the visit by Suu Kyi as it shows the great attention that she and the Myanmar Government have paid to the bilateral relations.
Suu Kyi expressed her hope that the Myanmar-China ties will be consolidated and developed further.
The State Counselor is scheduled to meet with President Xi Jinping on August 19.
During the Myanmar leader’s five-day visit, the fate of the 3.6 billion USD Myitsone hydropower plant project, which Myanmar put on hold in 2011, is expected to be a main topic in her meetings with Chinese leaders.
Contracts to build a bridge near the shared border in Kunlong town and two hospitals in Yangon and Mandalay – the two largest cities of Myanmar – are hoped to be signed at this time as well.
China is currently Myanmar’s biggest investor with a total capital of 15.4 billion USD.-VNA
