Hanoi (VNA) - Myanmar's Government has designateda new protected public forest area in Katha district of Sagaing region.

The country’s Ministry of Natural Resources andEnvironmental Conservation recently designated the area of more than 550hectares as "Gahe-2" protected public forest, in Katha's Indaw township.

The move is aimed at conserving watershed areas to protect farmland and biodiversity.

The Southeast Asian country expects to establish 30% of itstotal area as forest reserves and 10% as protected areas, local media reported.

In the 2020-2021 fiscal year, 174,977 sq.km of forests, or25% of the country’s territory, were preserved./.
