Hanoi (VNA) – Speaker of the House of Representatives (PyithuHluttaw) of Myanmar U Win Myint stepped down after two years holding theposition, announced Vice Speaker T Khun Myat in a session on March 21.

However, Khun Myat did not disclosethe reason for the resignation.

U Win Myint was elected as theSpeaker of the House of Representatives in February 2016.

Earlier the same day, MyanmarPresident U Htin Kyaw also resigned as he wanted to “take a rest”.

According to a notice posted bythe President’s Office on Facebook, a replacement would be in place withinseven working days. The parliament is in session this week, and a new presidentcould be voted into place by the end of the week.

Vice President U Myint Swe willserve as acting president until the parliament chooses a replacement, saidChief of the President’s Office U Zaw Htay.

Htin Kyaw was elected asPresident of Myanmar on March 15, 2016. He has been the first civilian Presidentof Myanmar since 1960.-VNA
