Myanmar lifts restriction on chicken transport as H5N1 under control

Myanmar on August 27 announced the lifting of restrictions on transport of chickens and other products imposed due to the recent bird flu H5N1 attack, claiming that the outbreak is under control.

Hanoi (VNA) – Myanmar on August27 announced the lifting of restrictions on transport of chickens and otherproducts imposed due to the recent bird flu H5N1 attack, claiming that theoutbreak is under control.

According to the country’s LivestockBreeding and Veterinary Department, there have been no suspicious chickendeaths in Dawei and Mayangone townships due to avian influenza. Restrictions onthe transport of chickens and its products were lifted 21 days after the startof the containment programme, the department said.

Myanmar authorities confirmed the H5N1outbreak in Dawei township, southern Tanintharyi region on July 26, with morethan 5,000 chickens culled to stop the virus spreading. Local authorities then imposed a ban onsales of eggs and poultry at markets in the township.

Myanmar was first hit by an H5N1 outbreak in2006 and it has happened eight times in the country since then. The Julyoutbreak was Tanintharyi’s first.-VNA
